Beware of the 'aesthetic clinics or salons, and aesthetic physicians'. Malaysia is in the process of publishing its National Specialist Register. This will help the lay public distinguish between who is a specialist and who is not. For cosmetic procedures, plastic surgery and skin laser surgery, gazetted dermatologists and plastic surgeons are the only properly qualified specialists to perform these procedures. Aesthetic Medicine is not a recognized field in Malaysia and there is no such gazetted specialist as an ‘Aesthetic Physician”. Beware of the 'aesthetic clinics or salons, and aesthetic physicians'
So choose your doctor wisely. Make sure the physician is a bona fide specialist and accredited to do cosmetic procedures. One should check with one’s Embassy to find out which doctors are recommended. Also, check out official website of ISO-certified hospitals or professional bodies such as that of the Malaysian Dermatological Society (Persatuan Dermatologi Malaysia or PDM) at www.dermatology.org.my to locate a fully registered dermatologist. NB. Do note that Associate PDM members are not gazetted dermatologists – only Full members of PDM are gazetted dermatologists.

Verify doctor’s credentials. Ensure that your doctor is registered with MAPACS (Malaysian Association of Plastic, Aesthetic and Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons) which is the main body representing qualified plastic surgeons in Malaysia. Testimonials from previous patients are helpful , but bear in mind that every patient is unique and outcomes can vary. Obviously, a series of successful patients speaks well for the doctor, as opposed to a series of disgruntled patients. Also, doctors are bound by ethics to maintain confidentiality at all times, so do not expect your doctor to send you before and after pictures by e-mail. Safety cannot be compromised for cost or end result.
Keep abreast of new developments. Your doctor should keep abreast of the latest developments, and the best way to determine this is to do your own research on the procedure that you are about to undertake.
A good surgeon places his or her patient’s safety above all and abides by the rule --- first, do your patients no harm. If your expectations are unrealistic, a good surgeon will tell you the stark reality and talk you out of it, or reach a compromise. No amount of lift is worth a facial nerve palsy and no amount of fat loss is worth deep vein thrombosis, a pulmonary embolism or a fat embolism. Safety cannot be compromised for cost or end result.
